Call for Submissions

Art, Poetry, and Stories on Diabetes, Chronic Illness, and the Fight for Access

The Bodies Anthology is a global creative project centering the voices of those living with diabetes and chronic conditions. We are looking for "Creative Resistance" work that explores the realities of health equity, systemic barriers, and the power of collective care.

 

By submitting, you agree to have your work featured in the Digital Edition, with the potential to be selected for the Print Edition.​ 

 

Key Themes

  • The daily reality of living with diabetes or chronic illness, wherever you are and however it looks for you.

  • The global medication price crisis and rationing.

  • Intersectionality, health disparities, and geographic barriers to care.

  • Grassroots activism, collective action, and the #insulin4all movement.

To ensure we can process submissions efficiently and produce a high-quality publication, please follow the guidelines below strictly.

 

1. Eligibility

This anthology is a space for those with direct lived experience of chronic illness.

  • Focus: Submissions from individuals living with diabetes or other chronic health conditions are prioritised. 

  • Scope: Submissions from caregivers, family members, or healthcare professionals are welcomed, provided the work centers on the lived experience of the patient and the fight for access/equity.

  • Reach: We welcome submissions from around the world.

  • Language: This first anthology is an all-volunteer project, and current capacity means that submissions can only be accepted in English. If you would like to submit your piece in an additional language alongside English (which we would aim to publish side-by-side), please feel free to do so.

 

2. Submission Categories & Specifics

Failure to follow these formatting rules may result in your work being excluded without review.

 

Prose (Short Stories, Essays, Creative Non-Fiction)

  • Length: Maximum 800 words

  • Formatting: 12pt Arial font, double-spaced, 1-inch margins

  • File Type: .docx or .pdf

 

Poetry

  • Quantity: Maximum 2 poems per person

  • Formatting: 12pt Arial font, single-spaced

  • File Type: .docx or .pdf.

 

Visual Art & Photography

  • Quantity: Maximum 2 images

  • Quality: High-resolution (Minimum 300 DPI)

  • Color Profile: CMYK preferred for print-ready files

  • File Type: .jpg or .png (Do not embed images in Word docs)

 

How to Prepare Your File

To save our editorial team administrative time, all files must be named as follows:
Surname_Title_Category (e.g., Smith_TheCostofInsulin_Poetry).

 

3. The Publishing Model

This anthology uses a hybrid model to maximize inclusivity:

  • Global Digital Edition (Free Online): Submissions that meet our community guidelines and formatting limits will be included in the online anthology.

  • Printed Hard Copy Edition: If enough submissions are received, and as capacity allows, we will create a curated selection of pieces to feature in a physical hard copy edition. These will be available through a print-on-demand service.

 

4. Editorial Policy & Terms

  • Originality: All work must be your own. AI-generated content is strictly prohibited.

  • Right to Refuse: As an all-volunteer project, we reserve the right to refuse any submission that does not meet our formatting guidelines, promotes medical misinformation, contains hate speech, or falls outside the scope of the project’s themes.

  • Copyright: You retain full copyright of your work. By submitting, you grant Bodies Anthology the non-exclusive right to publish your work in our digital and print editions.

  • Capacity Disclaimer: In the event of an overwhelming volume of submissions, the Editor reserves the right to limit the total number of inclusions.
